John Dahlsen

My environmental art work incorporates sculpture, assemblage, installation and painting, which was my main medium prior to my working for over 12 years with found objects, making sculptures and assemblages from beach found plastic litter, largely based on environmental themes, taking society’s discarded objects of the everyday and transforming them into formal compositions. I have been engaged in a long standing exploration of the coastal landscape, in painting, assemblage, sculpture and photography in the area where I live and work. My work has for many years examined the passage of time in the landscape and the place of man within it. The landscapes featured in my work are the very same places I have roamed over the years and collected detritus and materials for my assemblages and other works. I have used recycled materials to convey the history and memory of a place, to comment on the human experience of place, beauty, degradation of the environment and the inspiration possibile with recycling through a positive aesthetic experience.
